ARIEL
DORFMAN (Playwright)
Ariel Dorfmans novels, poems, and essays have
been translated into more than 40 languages and his
plays staged in over 100 countries, receiving numerous
international honors, including the Laurence Olivier
for Best Play (Death and the Maiden, filmed by
Roman Polanski) and two awards from the Kennedy Center.
His latest works are Desert Memories (Lowell
Thomas Award for a travel book) and a novel, Burning
City, written with his youngest son, Joaquin. His
eldest son, Rodrigo, has dramaturged all Ariels
plays, including, this season, Purgatorio at
the Seattle Rep and Picassos Closet at
Theater J in Washington, DC. A Chilean-American born
in Argentina (full story in his memoir Heading South,
Looking North), he now lives in Durham with his
wife Angélica. He holds the Walter Hines Page
Chair at Duke University and contributes regularly to
major newspapers around the world. |
